From the ancient, shadowed temples of Siem Reap to the kinetic, rising skyline of Phnom Penh; Cambodia’s culinary landscape is redefining itself. The capital has become a canvas of flavors, where traditional Khmer roots intertwine effortlessly with Chinese heritage and refined Western techniques.

I've tried plenty of Chinese restaurant yet Zhan Liang reinterprets Chinese fine dining with a rare, expansive clarity. The menu moves across borders, capturing the delicate nuances of Cantonese, the depth of Sichuanese, and the comforting structures of Northern Chinese cuisines.

The interior is exceptionally stylish. Multi-tiered chic chandeliers hang from high ceilings, casting a warm ambient glow that immediately softens the atmosphere of the place which gives a profound intimate setting even for a brief lunch getaway.

The long sofa, stretched in neutral grey fabric across the room, is layered with an array of rectangular pillows in alternating shades of cream, textured grey-blue, and warm amber-orange. It is incredibly soft, a tactile invitation to linger.

We start the course with a Wok-fried flat noodles with tender beef and morning glory infused with a distinct, smoky wok that elevates the entire dish. It was quickly followed by the main event, a Delicate Har Gaw (shrimp dumplings) that precede the slow-roasted pork belly served with a traditional Chinese mustard sauce that makes it the undisputed star of the show, according to my other half. The roasted duck features a skin-to-meat ratio so precisely executed it feels almost theatrical, perfectly grounded by rich hoisin sauce and steamed rice.

Insider tip: Steamed rice is a must!

For those seeking a more familiar, European intimacy, Le Langka offers a chic bistro located in the vibrant BKK1 district that trades soaring opulence for understated charm and precise, comforting execution.

The Gnocchi with Feta, Basil, and Walnuts is an essential start to the evening. The walnuts and fresh basil ground the dish, creating a beautifully creamy, earthy profile.

The grilled duck breast paired with gratinated potatoes is absolute perfection. The rich, gamey depth of the tender duck balances beautifully against the indulgent creaminess of the potatoes. Equally exceptional is the Veal Tenderloin with baby potatoes: flawlessly cooked, tender, and bathed in a well-constructed sauce. While the cocktails miss the mark, this menu is undeniably best paired with a fine wine.

The chocolate fondant is a mandatory finale. It arrives decadent and molten, contrasting beautifully with a classic vanilla ice cream.

Whether your palate leans toward the intricate heritages of Asia or the classic comforts of the West, Phnom Penh’s rapid evolution is serving up something truly thrilling. Southeast Asia is growing, and its culinary future has never tasted more exciting.
